Games With Gold Brings XCOM Free, 3 Years After it Already Was

Xbox One, console

Games With Gold celebrates its third birthday.

June is the third anniversary of Microsoft’s Games With Gold program. All four of this month’s games continue to be playable on Xbox One, thanks to backwards compatibility. Of course, 360 owners still get access to two games that they can keep indefinitely. However, Microsoft’s Games with Gold program continues to offer free games from quite a while ago.

Last month we reported that one of the best games free on Games with Gold for May was Peggle. A nine year old game by this point. Well, this month XCOM is available for free for Xbox Live Gold members, three years after PlayStation Plus subscribers got it as part of their Instant Games Collection. They even did so alongside seven other games, too.

Xbox One

  • Goat Simulator (available June 1 – June 30)
  • The Crew (available June 16 – July 15)

Xbox 360

  • Super Meat Boy (available June 1 – June 15)
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown (available June 16 – June 30)

Super Meat Boy originally launched on Xbox 360 to excellent reviews. Its been ported to numerous systems since 2010 and is one of the most renowned games on the platform.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown revived the dormant series in 2012, and has recently been followed up with 2016’s XCOM 2. If you want to see how aliens took over Earth, Enemy Unknown’s brutal difficulty will quickly show why.

These games are a $95 value if purchased separately, but with an Xbox Live membership they’re free for as long as the subscription lasts. All of these games can be downloaded directly to Xbox One through the console itself or online.
