Is there anything more satisfying in Doom than walking into a room full of demons and mowing them down with an unlimited chaingun? While this may sound like something you can obtain via a power-up, it’s actually a build you can make by collecting some of Doom’s various secrets and collectibles. There are pros and cons to playing this build of course, as this rewards an agile player who can aim on the go. If you cannot aim, move, and shoot effectively, then this might not be the right one for you. It’s all about momentum and dodging enemy fire, but we’ll get to that.
The first thing you will need for this build is to obtain the runes Rich Get Richer and Armored Offensive. You should also upgrade your armor reserve to the max via argent energy. To locate the Rich Get Richer rune, travel to chapter 9 and locate the trail that’s hidden behind a gated off security door just before the long hallway. There’s a hatch on the floor you can crawl into to get to this challenge. Armored Offensive shows up a bit earlier, in chapter 7 on the walkway near the landing zone.
Once you’ve obtained both runes, equip them and one of your choosing, I prefer the Dazed and Confused rune. So now that you have all of this ancient, hellish magic, what does it actually do? Well, my eager space marine, they will give you unlimited ammo in all of your main 8 weapons as long as your armor rating is above 100 – 75 once you’ve upgraded Rich Get Richer to level 2. The name of the game is to get your armor up and keep it up, so you can traverse the map spraying an endless supply of bullets.
Since you will never have to reload, weapons such as the chaingun and gauss cannon become potent room clearing weapons. You will always want to stay on the move, as dodging enemy fire will be paramount to you keeping your infinite supply of ammo up. Make sure to stagger picking up any large drops of armor in case you take a severe beating. This will ensure that your armor supply is always over 100, especially since the Armored Offensive rune will net you armor after each glory kill! Prioritize killing ranged enemies first, as they can chip your armor far faster than the slower more melee based demons.
Even though you can use any weapon for this build, my personal favorite is the Plasma Rifle with Stun Bomb and the chaingun with Mobile Turret. Since you are trying your best to avoid being hit, the ability to stun large demons such as the Baron of Hell or Hell Knights is invaluable. Stunning a group of demons will afford you enough time to switch to another weapon and really lay on the hurt. Make sure to upgrade both the Stun Bombs and Mobile Turret perks first to give yourself a bit more advantage.
While this is just one build you can make in Doom, I’ve found the sheer utility of having unlimited ammo to be extremely helpful in the later levels. When you’re being chased down by two Cacodemons and a Hell Knight, you will be happy that you don’t have to scrounge for ammo!
