Creating a rift.
Last month, some Vive gamers found themselves able to play Oculus Rift exclusives like Lucky’s Tale thanks to a “proof-of-concept compatibility layer” called Revive. However, Oculus has removed the ability to do so in its latest app update.
In order to play the games, you still had to buy them through the Oculus store. The Revive software however, meant that you didn’t have to play them on just an Oculus Rift. Oculus’ app update 1.4 has added an additional piece of security to the process of purchasing games from the Oculus store however, which checks to see if an Oculus Rift is connected or not. If not, the game won’t work.
Many saw this coming, as Oculus told Gamesindustry.biz previously that they had plans to get rid of Revive: “This is a hack, and we don’t condone it. Users should expect that hacked games won’t work indefinitely, as regular software updates to games, apps, and our platform are likely to break hacked software.”
