A few days ago Sony gave us a glimpse of an upcoming video featuring voice actors Nolan North and Troy Baker, reflecting on their work with the Uncharted series. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is the closing chapter of Nathan Drake’s adventure, as well as the story of two brothers. North is the iconic voice of the series hero Nathan Drake, while Baker stars as Nathan’s older brother Sam Drake.
The video features a conversation between the two actors, as they discuss what the series has meant to them and how its been to work on it. For North, who’s spent the past decade playing the character, Uncharted 4 is a bit of a melancholic experience. Playing Nathan Drake has been the job of a lifetime for him, as he really invested himself in creating the character. Near the beginning of the video Baker even asks North, “How much of Nathan Drake do you think is Nolan?” North says he doesn’t think people realize how much of a process it can be to voice a character like this.
Baker had a bit of a different experience from his fellow actor, as he’s only joined the voice cast recently as Nathan Drake’s brother Sam. However, Baker notes that he’s been with the series from the beginning as a fan, and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is even one of the games that helped inspired him to be a voice actor. Baker recalls when creative director Neil Druckmann, called him to play the role of Sam. When he received the call the actor responded to Druckmann by saying, “Don’t mess with me man. Don’t lie to me if this isn’t going to be true.”
For both actors, the series and Nathan Drake as a character have evolved over the years. One of the biggest moment for North was with the release of Uncharted 2. North’s son was playing the game, turned to him and said “That–that’s you!” After seeing things through his son’s eyes, everything registered differently for him. Baker responded by saying, “You saw the work; he saw the character.”
One of Baker’s favorite memories is an early scene from A Thief’s End, where Nate sees Sam again for the first time. The two brothers look out over the sea as Sam says, “What did I miss, catch me up.” It seems incredible for the actor that the two men can sit next to each other and perform, one auditioned for a role ten years ago and the other became a fan around the same time.
