Eric Medalle, the Design Director for the Pokemon game series has passed away. He died on Sunday after his SUV was crushed by a falling tree.

Medalle worked on many hit Pokemon games, providing graphic designs and artwork for games such as Pokemon X and Y, Pokemon Black and White, and Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. King5 News in Seattle reported that he was tragically killed in a freak accident while driving with one of his two young daughters around 1:30 PST. A windstorm caused a Douglas Fir to fall onto Medalle’s vehicle. Medalle was killed by the collision but his daughter was rescued by a passerby. Thankfully, she escaped with only minor injuries.

Commenting on the tragic accident, Matt Stemple, a tree trimmer for Seattle Parks and Recreation said: “I would say it was totally unforeseen with such high abnormal wind speeds and the amount of rain we had received… any prediction or risk assessment that we would have done if we had seen this tree prior just really wouldn’t be valid in such extreme weather conditions.”

Our thoughts are with Medalle’s family and friends during this difficult time. His contribution to the gaming industry will long be remembered.
