Last summer at E3, Microsoft and The Coalition showed off Gears of War 4. We didn’t see much new, with the exception of two characters who were definitely not Marcus Fenix or anyone we knew from Delta Squad. This month, the game is the cover story for Game Informer, and they’ve gone and revealed the new leads for the next entry in the series.
Gears 4 takes place 25 years after the previous game. The primary protagonist is JD Fenix, Marcus’ son. He’s described as an “idealist” who ran away to join the COG when he was young and later went AWOL after a “classified incident”. Of course, players will learn more about this incident over the course of the game. He’ll be played by Liam McIntyre, who some will remember as the lead in Starz’ Spartacus.
Joining him along for the ride are Laura Bailey and Eugene Byrd as Kait Diaz and Del Walker, respectively. Kait’s described by Bailey as an entry point into the Gears world for new players who missed out on the first three games who grew up as an Outsider, folks who lived outside the walled city-states that protect most of humanity. As for Walker, he’s a fellow ex-COG that was also involved in JD’s classified incident that caused them both to go AWOL. To help sell the bond between Del and JD, Byrd and McIntyre actually became friends and got to know each other.
Gears of War 4 hits the Xbox One later this year.
