Here’s How amiibo Function in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

Actual amiibo, not paper amiibo.

For the upcoming entry in the Mario & Luigi series, Paper Mario joins in on the action, as Nintendo blends two dimensions of their mascot into one big RPG called Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. Previously announced during the 2015 Nintendo E3 Digital Event, a suitable amount of information has been released about the title, including how the game will be compatible with select amiibo figures and how adorable the game will be.

Suffice to say, it will be very adorable.

Additionally, though, Nintendo has recently released a video with an overview of much of what the game contains, including how amiibo will function.

In Paper Jam, players can collect special “Battle Cards” to be used in the middle of battle for varying effects, such as buffs, debuffs, coins, and the like. The video shows that amiibo may be scanned onto the Nintendo 3DS, and they will unlock special Character Cards for use in battle. For example, the video has a Mario amiibo scanned to unlock a special Fire Mario Character Card that dishes out a hefty amount of damage to each enemy.

This functionality should offer some simple yet thorough customization for players that want to try out different strategies in the heat of combat. You can look forward to trying out Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam for yourself when it releases on the Nintendo 3DS on January 22, 2016.
