Dark Souls III May Be the Last ‘Souls’ Game

Dark souls 3

Is this the end?

Dark Souls III could very well be the last ‘Souls’ game we ever get to play. Dark Souls III Director and From Software president, Hidetaka Miyazaki told Gamespot in a recent interview that he is “considering Dark Souls 3 to be the big closure on the series.”

Miyazaki responded that way when asked about whether or not people may be getting over exposed to the franchise with the high number of Souls and Soul-inspired games such as Bloodborne. Here was his full response to that question via GameSpot:

“It’d be a lie if I said I have no concerns about that. I don’t think it’d be the right choice to continue indefinitely creating Souls and Bloodborne games. I’m considering Dark Souls 3 to be the big closure on the series. That’s not just limited to me, but From Software and myself together want to aggressively make new things in the future. Dark Souls 3 will mark the last game where the development project began before I became president. The next title will be a game that was conceived while I was president. I believe that From Software has to create new things. There will be new types of games coming from us, and Dark Souls 3 is an important marker in the evolution of From Software.

I don’t care about what type of president I will be in the future or how I’ll be remembered, I just believe that [moving on] is necessary in order for players to continue enjoying our games. We have to keep creating quality games and be aggressive about doing new things.”

Sure, there is the possibility that some other entity that doesn’t involve Miyazaki directly could create another Souls game; but by the way it sounds, if Miyazaki has something to say about it, From Software may be moving on to something new. Which could be good or bad depending on your feelings about the franchise.

Either way, that’s Miyazaki’s thoughts now, his opinion could certainly change in the future. But right now, if you’re a From Software fan looking forward to more Souls games after Dark Souls III, it might be time to hit the panic button.
