Blizzard took to the stage at Gamescon today to unveil the next chapter in World of Warcraft‘s history, less than one year after Warlords of Draenor.
The upcoming expansion, titled Legion, sees the demonic return of the Burning Legion. A trembling Azeroth must heed the call to action and turn against the shadow: “Steel yourself, champion. Extinction is imminent.”
The official Legion feature list so far includes the following, with more announcements yet to come:
- New continent: The Broken Isles
- New class: Demon Hunter
- Artifacts: customizable weapons that grow in power as you do
- Class-specific Order Halls and followers
- All New Dungeons and Raids
- New World Bosses
- Level cap raised to 110
- Revamped PvP progression system
- Improved transmogrification system
- Improved social features
- Character Boost—immediately raise one character to level 100
- . . . and more
The new Demon Hunter class looks to be the most innovative hero class to date. Blind and winged, the Illidari yield magically augmented sight and hellish metamorphosis forms to spot foes behind obstacles and glide into combat with incredible speed and strength. Fans of Warcraft 3 will notice a resemblance to the Demon Hunter hero, whose sacrificial pacts with darkness offered abilities similar to those of WoW‘s new class.
The hellish Demon Hunters and the return of the Burning Legion really drive home the Illidari theme of this expansion. WoW fans will experience firsthand the legends of Illidan and the Legion through their own class, the ancient lands of The Broken Isles, and an epic endeavor to save Azeroth.
Legions’ callback to classic WoW lore follows in the steps of Warlords of Draenor, which delved into the rich traditions of the Draenei and the endangered history of Outland. The fateful return of Illidan Stormrage, an iconic figure in WoW history, is the glaring centerpiece of this expansion’s reveal. We’re sure to see a strong story from the twice-scourned twin of Malfurion and his famed Warglaives.
