Destiny’s Gjallarhorn Will Not Be Upgradeable In Year Two

Keep calm. And focus on better exotics to come in year two.

Last weekend, the entire Destiny community was in an uproar when it was made apparent that Destiny’s exotic weapons dealer Xur was selling the coveted Gjallarhorn for 18 strange coins. Thousands of guardians rushed to their consoles in order to purchase the weapon for which players are willing to discriminate in raid parties.

Not every guardian was home at their console last weekend. Some people were on vacation or attending to other matters and we ended up hearing several stories about how all sorts of players needed to contact their friends, families, spouses, and significant others, in order to turn on their console, power up Destiny, and purchase a Gjallarhorn from Xur.

Now, in what appears to be a cruel twist of fate for all of those who were so excited to have just purchased Gjallarhorn, as well as for those loyal guardians who have long been passionate lovers of this exotic rocket launcher, Bungie has confirmed via weekly update that the Gjallarhorn will not be upgradeable to year 2 damage levels. That’s right, “Gjallarhorn will remain a Year One Exotic at Year One levels.”

That doesn’t mean Gjallarhorns are completely vanishing or getting deleted. They will be a major boon in the beginning stages of Destiny: The Taken King. However, one can expect that as time passes, the Gjallarhorn will be phased out of use.

Then again, you never really know with Destiny. With Bungie’s openness to player feedback, this is something that could potentially change if enough players voice loud enough feedback. So we wouldn’t dismantle those Gjallarhorns just yet.

What do you think about this surprising news? Devastated? Feeling smug that those who bought them last weekend didn’t earn or deserve them? Feeling like a deer in headlights and don’t know what to think yet? Be sure to let us know in the comments.
