In a shocking turn of events, MangaGamer hosted a panel at Anime Expo in Los Angeles this weekend and announced that Umineko: When They Cry would be coming to Steam. For those who may not be aware, Umineko is a sound novel that revolves around Battler Ushiromiya and the mysterious killings that have occurred on Rokkenjima Island at the Ushiromiya family’s annual reunion.
The sound novel will challenge players to attempt to explain away the mysteries with ‘human logic’, while the game’s antagonist Beatrice tries to convince Battler (and the player) to surrender and accept the existence of witches and magic.
According to the official MangaGamer blog, the developers will be working closely with the Witch Hunt team to “update the translation for Umineko”, and new character artwork will also be featured in this updated Steam release. However, players will also be given the option to choose between the updated and original character sprites.
MangaGamer has not specified a release date for Umineko just yet. Nevertheless, this is still a pretty big win for all visual novel lovers out there, given the lack of attention Umineko has had in the west.
