If there’s one thing that’s grown over the years, it’s watching people play video games on the internet. Whether it’s because it’s fun watching people suck, for tips, or just plain hilarity, it’s become its own pretty big thing. Game streaming sites like Twitch are having their own conventions, and Let’s Play stars like Achievement Hunter and Markiplier are basically rock stars at this point. So how do you make that stand out on YouTube? Give them their own space.
Today, YouTube has announced that they’ll be launching their own dedicated app and website solely devoted to gaming, cleverly named YouTube Gaming. If you’re a fan of Let’s Plays, livestreams, speed runs, or whatever, this’ll be the place for you. As the website’s product manager Alan Joyce describes it:
“YouTube Gaming is built to be all about your favorite games and gamers, with more videos than anywhere else. From ‘Asteroids’ to ‘Zelda,’ more than 25,000 games will each have their own page, a single place for all the best videos and live streams about that title. You’ll also find channels from a wide array of game publishers and YouTube creators.”
Like the regular site itself, you’ll be able to subscribe to channels and instantly notified of livestreams when they start. Recommendations will be based off the user’s channel, and you’ll be able to search for a game knowing you’ll get exactly what you want. New features for streamers are being promised so they don’t need to be scheduled ahead of time, but there wasn’t much detail given. YouTube Gaming is expected to hit the US and UK later this summer.
