Shenmue fans scratched their head a little bit when it was revealed at Sony’3 E3 press conference last week that Shenmue 3 would be a Kickstarter project. There was one question on everyone’s minds: “Why isn’t Sony backing the development of this game?”
In an interview with Eurogamer, Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Sony’s worldwide studios, stepped up to clarify the company’s position with regards to this newly announced game.
According to him, “There’s a variety of ways of support, including financial support. When the game’s not being funded at that point, the developer has to come up with some funding themselves, for third party relations team to help – because third party relations is third party relations – if we fund the project then it’s first party! It’s my job! There’s a great difference. If Suzuki’s Kickstarter is successful, SCEA will add funding and other support.”
Considering that Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter met its goals with overwhelming support from fans, it looks like Sony will indeed be stepping up to aid the game’d development.
