Did You Know Bloodborne Was Inspired By This Film/Manga Series?

A hidden path waits ahead.

By now, many Bloodborne fans have heard that the game’s plot was inspired by the literary works of author H.P. Lovecraft. However, what many people don’t know is that Bloodborne, as well as the Souls series, also draws inspiration from the film/manga series Berserk.

According to Wikipedia, Berserk is, “a manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. Set in a medieval Europe-inspired fantasy world, the story centers on the characters of Guts, an orphaned mercenary, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the Band of the Hawk.”

While this description is true, it seriously underrepresents the fantasy world portion of the series. The world of Berserk is not as much of a fantasy as it is a hellish nightmare. On the surface, its society isn’t so different than the society in our world during the medieval time period. This is similar to the way Bloodborne almost seems to resemble a normal Victorian era society.

However, just as with Bloodborne, there are dark secrets and powerful evil deities that lurk in the shadows. The further one progresses through the story of Berserk, the less it is about a band of mercenaries and the more it is about transdimensional demon Gods and the struggle of the main character, Guts, to triumph in a world where the odds are so heavily stacked against him. Once again, if you’ve beaten Bloodborne or at least progressed through a few bosses, the general theme here should be ringing a bell.

The references and parallels don’t end there. There are many more that you can check out in this cool video below; be warned though, there may be some spoilers.

The Berserk film series is awesome, however as is often the case, the manga is quite a bit ahead in the story and the animators have not yet had the time to fully catch up. So if you start with the film series, it’s going to be a bit of a tease. But at that point, you could always continue with the manga. Or you can start with the manga, and then move on to the films. Or whatever. In any case, if you love Bloodborne, you will absolutely want to check out Berserk.
