1. Major Cues from Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
The third installment in the series was the last to be developed for the 6th generation of consoles (PS2). Its reception in the U.S. was actually extremely good, earning top scores by reviewers (IGN awarded the game a 9/10, and overall Metacritic ratings weighed in at 80/100) and selling over 600,000 copies.
Despite the subsequent, though somewhat reduced success of Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Star Ocean 5 appears to be taking its aesthetic squarely from Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. The obvious moniker is the game’s logo; fans of the series will recognize its similarity to SO3 immediately.
The character designs also give off some subtle yet comfortable nods. Apart from Miki, the childhood friend character, colors look vibrant yet cool and sleek. This is a far cry from the pop and pizazz of Star Ocean: The Last Hope where Edge’s hair was so yellow it almost blinded players. Most of the costumes so far are also following the medieval-fantasy style of many Star Ocean 3 characters such as Nel, Pepitia, and even Fayt. Apart from one design seen so far, everyone appears to be eschewing metal in favor of that high fantasy look reminiscent of Elicoor II.
