When a series as forward-thinking, and innovative as Deus Ex gets a next-gen sequel, it’s bound to come with some new and shiny improvements. One such enhancement will be coming to the performance of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’s gravely-voiced protagonist.
In an exclusive interview with Elias Toufexis, the actor who plays Adam Jensen in both Human Revolution as well as Mankind Divided, it’s revealed that the main character has been fully motion captured for the very first time, breaking ground for the futuristic franchise.
“Also, though I did a little bit last time, I fully performance capture and voice Adam.” stated Toufexis.
The Deus Ex games are story and character heavy, unfolding in the form science-fiction noir mysteries. Players are transplanted into a dark near-future, where human physical augmentations have drastically changed the world, for better or for worse.
With this considered, it’s almost ironic that despite being both applauded and awarded for its great writing and acting, the Deus Ex franchise has, to a degree, been limited by technology in terms of conveying its cast with a true sense of humanity. According to Toufexis, a veteran of the film and television landscape, as well as video games, mo-cap is a transformative experience, helping to blur the lines between himself and the role.
“It’s much more freeing for an actor to not be locked in a sound booth for major scenes, but to actually be playing them like a film.” he explains. “So that my body, face and voice are all recorded then turned into Adam.”
Although a trailer and several images have been released for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, in-game footage has yet to surface. So we’ll have to wait just a little longer to see what difference a fully mo-capped Jensen makes.
The entire Q&A with Elias Toufexis, or Adam Jensen if you’d prefer, will go live on Friday April, 17 – so check back tomorrow to read more.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is currently available for pre-order at several retailers, however you may want to read this before you do.
