At the 2014 Final Fantasy XIV fanfest taking place in Tokyo, Square Enix announced two more playable jobs for the upcoming expansion, Heavensward, the Astrologian and the Machinist. While a gun based job has been hinted out for months now, not many were expecting a job resembling the popular Final Fantasy: Tactics character Mustadio. As far the Astrologian goes, that came completely out of left field. The Machinist will be a ranged DPS job while the Astrologian is a healer.
Other than what was shown in in the livestream, details are still very scarce on the two new jobs. We know that both of the new jobs will not have a base class associated with it. This is in line with the previously announced new tank class, Dark Knight.
The Astrologian is a healer that uses a star globe to call on the powers of the stars to heal allies. It also can use Miss. Cleo like tarot cards known as a divining deck to support party members in other ways as well. Although it’s a healing class, it might remind some players of the guest party character from FFT, the Astrologer Orran. Perhaps we’ll see the powerful ability, Celestial Stasis, make a comeback.
The next job that was revealed was the Machinist. This job bears a striking resemblance to Mustadio from FFT and is the gun based job that FFXIV director Naoki Yoshida has been hinting at. The Machinist will deal damage from afar by using a combination of its ranged gun weapon (that will not require ammo ala Final Fantasy XI’s Ranger) and mechanical turrets that can be deployed on the battlefield.
That’s pretty much all we have so far on the new jobs. Between a new playable race (the Au Ra), a completely new region to explore and now at least three new jobs, Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is shaping up to be a pretty expansive expansion!
