Break out of Prison in The Escapists (Review)

1 of 2

It took Andy Dufresne twenty years to escape Shawshank State Penitentiary Prison in the Shawshank Redemption, and now it’s your turn. The Escapists Early Access was released on the 20th of August, 2014, by Mouldy Toof Studios and instantly became a hit on Steam with 804 positive reviews from an overall 843. You are a prisoner, in one of the many prisons available during the Early Access build, and your goal is to escape whilst avoiding detection of your nefarious plans.

But how do you do it? Do you dig underground until you breach the outer electrical fences? Find a way through the ventilation shafts and jump the wall? Or maybe you think you’re strong enough to take down all the prison guards and escape. However, plotting your escape takes time and patience as you search the prison and other cells for items, increasing your strength and intelligence attributes to craft tools or even weapons. You aren’t alone, though, with several other prisoners with useful information and items, but do you help them or create enemies that could foil your plans at its most critical stage? That’s your decision.

Every prison has a routine as well, if you don’t follow that then you’ll be caught instantly, but overall ,the decisions are yours alone. If you have ever had any thoughts of how to escape a high security prison, then this game will allow you to place those plans into action and we’ll see how far you get. With the ability to craft dozens of different items, ranging from toothbrushes to comb shivs, The Escapists is perfect for innovation and brings out individual playing styles into an open-world.

Following routine is crucial to avoid detection in prison.

The true addiction of this game comes from the sheer intensity and delicacy of an escape plan where timing is crucial. One wrong move and you may have lost all the progress you’ve made, and this threat opens up a variety of opportunities and different play styles. Every new prison released comes with a new challenge, another obstacle and an even more imaginative way of escaping, but the game isn’t going to help you. There are no tutorials, no crafting recipes and no guides as to possible escape routes, it’s up to you to figure out how the prison works and the best plan to take.
