Driveclub Online Functions & PS Plus Edition Delayed

Driveclub has been available for purchase in American territories for a day now. Evolution Studio’s racer is built quite closely around the idea of social interaction with the use of Clubs. These Clubs are not only central to the online functionality of the game though. They are also necessary for the unlocking of many cars dotted throughout the game. Sounds great right? Well it would if this system was working. Instead, it seems that there is something missing for now.

As players voiced their own concerns on various online forums and social networks, the developers have come out to explain what is going wrong. In a post on Facebook Evolution Studios have said that the amount of traffic is “pushing the servers to their absolute limits”. The game will constantly try to connect to its online portion but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will work. Players who already own the game have a glimmer of hope in that “Once you’re online, you should have no further problems during your session”.

For players this results in a handful of issues ranging from the inability to connect to or start clubs, resulting in a lack of any Club functionality, to a small notification (shown above) running across the bottom of the screen at the start of each race detailing that the game was unable to connect to servers.

Those who are waiting for the PS Plus Edition of Driveclub however are likely to be disappointed because “In order to help all DRIVECLUB players who have the game already, we’re temporarily holding back the PS Plus Edition and the My DRIVECLUB app to ease the load and traffic to the servers”. This essentially means that the free version of Driveclub will not be available until the developers have been able to get the servers working properly.

If you have pre-ordered or purchased a physical copy of Driveclub you will still be able to play as normal, just without any online functionality.

There is no expected time of arrival for the PS Plus Edition but Evolution are adamant that as soon as the issues are resolved, everything will be available as expected. Driveclub is also expected to release in Europe on October 10th, 2 days away.

Has this colored the prospect of you purchasing Driveclub? Were you looking to get the demo before playing the game at all? Did you see this coming through the powers of divination or the fact it was just likely to happen? Let us know in the comments down below.
