Child of Light was a small, experimental project pitched by the Ubisoft’s key creative staff as part of the company’s internal entrepreneurial initiative, which asks employees in the creative department to pitch unique ideas while they are between projects. Although the downloadable RPG title was tiny compared to Ubisoft’s big hitters, it was a rousing success deserving of its critical acclaim.
With this in mind, Ubisoft has made the Child of Light team a core team at the studio that will aim at making another grand success. Ubisoft Montreal’s VP of Creation, Lionel Raynaud, spoke of Child of Light’s success, and how Ubisoft is looking to capitalize by focusing on quality, creative gaming.
“We are super happy with Child of Light. The team did a good job and the game had a great reception,” Raynaud told CVG. “We were proud to deliver something new and unique – a lot of people were surprised that Montreal was delivering this kind of game.”
He also mentioned the Child of Light team is ready and rearing to start up their next project together: “The team learned a lot about RPG mechanics during development and this has resulted in us creating a core team. The people who made this game now want to work together again, whether it’s on a small game or not.”
“This dynamic has incredible value in the industry and it’s what we want to do: we want to create core teams that want to make great games,” he noted. “So yes, we will encourage other initiatives like Child of Light and there’s a chance that we will have many more games like that in the future. I already have many different projects that are in the pitch stage – I even had one in my office this morning, which was super exciting.”
With their super team in place, Ubisoft is excited to usher in future projects that will follow in Child of Light‘s colorful footsteps. With their creative initiative ongoing, the company is excited to see more inspiring pitches become stars.
