A Few of the Most Ridiculous Western Pop Culture References Found in Murder Mystery Danganronpa 2

1 of 3

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. You’ve read the reviews, you’ve heard the fans rave; this is one hell of a mystery game. It’s also hilarious, freely abusing the fourth wall and cracking jokes every step of the way in between horrible murders.

JRPGs and other Eastern gems that come to the West don’t always get a full localization. Often, they receive just a subtitled translation of the Japanese text, so some jokes can go over an English speaker’s head. Sometimes, a localized game will swap out names and places to make the humor more easily accessible to the natives.

But when a game is so hip with the times that the jokes are universal, then you know you’re in for a good time. Danganronpa 2 nails it with some pretty spot-on references, and here are the best! (Spoilers to follow, ye be warned.)

1. Down With the Sickness – Disturbed

He seems a little...disturbed!

He seems a little…disturbed!

This one stands out due to its relative obscurity. This song peaked as part of the band’s first platinum single happened over a decade ago. Yet, exactly quoting the name of Disturbed’s hit single – a single so popular it made its way into Weird Al’s “Angry White Boy Polka” medley – is a pretty dead giveaway; not exactly funny, but pretty cool to catch it in Danganronpa 2. Fun fact: the Japanese actually really like American rock’n’roll and metal.
