Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed gets Rated M by ESRB for Yaoi and Provocative Top-Bottom Sexual Relations

Okay, first things first: no, the ESRB has not created warning labels for yaoi and top-bottom power in sexual relationships.

Today, the ESRB granted Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed, a Japanese adventure game coming to the west on PS3 and PS Vita a rating of M for Mature. The content descriptors that granted this game its M rating are actually all of sexual themes, strong language, and violence.

Check out the rating summary provided:

This is an action-adventure game in which players help a teenage boy and his friends defend a shopping district from evil forces. Players punch, kick, and use various weapons (e.g., bats, giant kebabs, umbrellas) to defeat human foes and enemy creatures (e.g., vampires) in hand-to-hand combat. By weakening foes, players are able to disrobe opponents down to their underwear; female characters are often depicted in lingerie/underwear. Still-frame images also depict male and female characters in provocative poses; the camera focuses on their underwear, pelvic areas and/or cleavage. The game also includes sexually suggestive dialogue and text (e.g., “I swear, if you go out with me, every part of me is yours,” and “Kanda is the brutal, sadistic top, while Akihabara is the easy bottom who cries out in pleasure in bed.”). The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “a*shole” appear in dialogue.

Now what’s actually pretty funny here is what exactly the ESRB decided to cite in its summary. Take a look at the bolded content. Kanda and Akihabara are two male characters engaged in homosexual relations. And, in the game, this quick little line is given describing how they…cuddle. Now don’t confuse this for the ESRB making some sort of condemnation on homosexuality, as that is certainly not the case. This one line may be in reference to homosexual relations, but it is being cited merely for its strong sexual content. I mean really, that one line does paint quite the picture.

But anyhow, what is most hilarious here is trying to imagine the individuals who screened this game for its content. Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed is still a pretty “out there” game by western standards. After all, let’s take a look at some of its notes in the rating summary:

“…defend a shopping district from evil forces.”

“By weakening foes, players are able to disrobe opponents down to their underwear.”

“…the camera focuses on their underwear, pelvic areas and/or cleavage.”

And then of course there was the whole top-bottom thing. Whoever had to look at Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed must have wondered the whole time “What the f*** am I playing?” In a perfect world, I really hope it’s the same person or people who looked at Monster Monpiece, the card-battling game where you pleasure anime girls. Yup.

I hope you got as good a chuckle out of all this as I did. You can expect to play Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed later this summer on your PS3 and PS Vita on August 5th.
