President of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, apologized for the recent spate of game delays on the PlayStation 4 platform. In an interview with PlayStation LifeStyle, Yoshida explained that because the PS4’s capabilities are so much wider, development teams have grown more ambitious, pushing back release windows as a result. Yoshida further commented:
What they are trying to achieve, they are challenging, y’know, something new. More realistic graphics, social connectivity, or seamless integration of single-player and multiplayer. And they are encountering new kinds of challenges, so they have to take more time than they anticipated.
While some might brush the excuse off as PR speak, it is a sound argument. Generally, when a game is rushed, it shows, and it suffers for it. For now we’ll have to wait until 2015 to see if these big name titles benefit from the extended development periods.
