David O’Reilly, the artist behind the fictional video games featured Spike Jonze’s Oscar winning film Her, is fast approaching a release of his first actual game. Mountain, a game described on its website as a “Mountain Simulator, Relax em’ up, Art Horror etc”, was originally set to be released on June 21st, but according to O’Reilly, will be coming out closer to the beginning of July.
The game itself has a number of seemingly bizarre, though intriguing, design choices. They include:
Audio on/off switch
Time moves forward
Things grow and things die
Nature expresses itself
~ 50 hours of gameplay
Once generated, you cannot be regenerated
It’s pretty up in the air how this will all work in practice, but I’d be lying if I said I weren’t intrigued. Mountain will be coming to PC, Mac, and iOS for $1, so the price of curiosity is indeed low. You can find out more about it here.
