Petitioners Want UbiArt Framework To Be Open-Source

Dimitris Dimarelos has started a petition on to persuade Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, to release Ubisoft’s UbiArt Framework as an open-source engine. Games that were made with UbiArt include Rayman Legends, and Child of Light.

In an interview with Develop in 2011, Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman, hinted at the idea of the engine being released as open-source.

“It won’t be like other game technologies, which are often locked away,” Ancel told Develop.

While the petition has been around since September, the number of signatures has grown by nearly 50 percent in the last month.

“This petition’s goal is not to harm Ubisoft’s image, which has always been one of the key companies that [brought] revolution in Gaming over the years, but to remind its managers of the great opportunity they have to give artists and small teams of game developers what they have always dreamed of,” reads the petition.

As of writing, the petition has gained 1,472 signatures.
