The latest entry in the high-flying Trials series, Trials Fusion, comes out in a few days but a playable version is here at PAX East this weekend. The time I spent with it was filled with retries, barely made checkpoints, and multiple profanity-laced outbursts; all trademarks of a good Trials game. The game retains the distinct 2.5D art style, with players traversing dynamic 3D backgrounds, going from left to right. The newest feature added was the ability to use the right stick to do motocross tricks while on your bike. This will make you crash repeatedly at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s extremely rewarding.
Hazards come out of the background to alter the tracks, and you can find the simple downhill slope you were on turned into multiple jumps going downhill. The sound design is surprisingly a crucial element to enjoying the game. Multiple times throughout your run, you’ll hear an incoming hazard before you see it. One stage was set alongside and Arctic oil pipeline, and the only heads-up you had that an explosion was about to happen was a audible rumble.
Trials Fusion releases on April 15th on next-gen consoles, Xbox 360, and PC.
