PAX East – Rain World Hands-On Impressions

You ever wanted to be a slug cat? Wait, first of all, have you ever heard of a slug cat? Well, it doesn’t matter, because you can finally be one in Rain World from developer Joar Jakobsson and Adult Swim Games. Alone or with a friend, the game features a slug cat that simply has to survive the terrors of this dark and, presumably, humid map before rain falls. If you run out of time, the rain will kill you. Just like in real life.

The only other problem to tackle is you’ll have to evade a few enemies along the way, big monsters that crawl up and around the map after you. You are, however, not entirely defenseless. Throughout the map, the slug cat can pick up a number of items, usually a rock or a stick, which you can use to throw at or beat the monster and incapacitate it for a short while, just long enough for you to escape.

Look at it go.

Look at it go.

The premise reminds me a lot of the Norfair stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl where players must beat the hell out of each other and find beautiful sanctuary inside of a this protective pod to shield themselves from a massive lava wave. Rain World takes this element and expands on it with fully traversable and climbable levels. The slug cat controls very nicely with the ability to wall jump and perform other slick little maneuvers to dodge your foes.

Up to four players can join in on the action simultaneously, making for a very grim, yet awesome party game. Rain World‘s atmosphere is something special with wonderfully detailed maps that add a very nice dimension to an otherwise intimidating environment. You can try out Rain World for yourself when it releases sometime later this year. While there’s no official release date yet, we’ll be sure to let you know once an official release date and more information appears.
