Unsung Story, a Kickstarter drive for a tactical RPG from the mind of Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre-famed Yasumi Matsuno came to life on January 14th. Said to be the game designer’s love child, it promises to deliver a wholly new tactical experience at the level of quality that once wowed gamers from the Playstation’s disc drive.
However, according to a recent tweet from Matsuno (and as listed on the Kickstarter page itself), he will not be directing the game.
To quote: “I won’t be doing the day-to-day directing, but I will be involved throughout development of #UnsungStory”
Matsuno is partnering with Playdek, a development company based on southern California. From the member descriptions listed on the Kickstarter page, it’s safe to say that they haven’t exactly pumped out a masterpiece in the realm of tactical RPG’s, but the company has been involved with quite a few board and cardgame conversions to the iOS platform.
Unsung Story promises to be a diverse and original experience, and from the list of stretch goal project members this game could be assembling quite the dream team. From Hitoshi Sakimoto (Valkyria Chronicles franchise composer, among 70+ others) to star English translators, Unsung Story might have the ingredients to be a hit.
Whether Matsuno’s “limited” involvement will negatively affect the project remains to be seen. It will, from his perspective, probably depend on how closely he can work with Playdek to ensure an execution of his vision that he’d be satisfied with.
Odds are it’ll be a great game nonetheless. You can check out the Kickstarter page here.
