NES Remix Adds Twists on the Games That Started it All

Just when you thought you knew how to play those NES games many of us grew up playing decades ago, Nintendo releases NES Remix, completely by surprise. NES Remix is an arcade challenge title that takes 16 classic NES games and takes certain levels or parts of levels, remasters them, and challenges you to complete them within a set time limit or under certain conditions. For example, the game may have you play levels of Super Mario Bros. completely backwards, silhouetted, invisible, or play Donkey Kong as Link, or beat a boss in Legend of Zelda with one arrow, and so on. The challenges will start out simple enough, but get increasingly difficult while you unlock more challenges and stamps to use on Miiverse. The list of games used is as follows:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Baseball
  • Clu Clu Land
  • Donkey Kong
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Donkey Kong 3
  • Excitebike
  • Golf
  • Ice Climber
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Mario Bros.
  • Pinball
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Tennis
  • Urban Champion
  • Wrecking Crew

In a way, it’s like a more complex WarioWare, but with NES titles. The brilliance of it though is that spin it puts on these now vastly familiar titles, making them something new and old all at once. Also, it’s a great way to introduce these titles to a new generation or anyone who hasn’t really played the old ones before. In that sense, it’s also a great marketing tool for the Virtual Console. Nintendo is killing two birds with one extremely clever stone. Bravo, Nintendo. You can pick up NES Remix available now on the Wii U eShop for $14.99.
