This morning, Konami issued a press release detailing what Ground Zeroes truly is. Turns out that suspicions have been confirmed and that this title will indeed be a prequel for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, directly linking into its story.
Citing the large changes coming to the series’ headway into an open-world system, Kojima stated that he and the studio want to ease players into the radical changes coming to the series. Konami’s way of going about that will be Ground Zeroes, a prologue offering an introduction into the open world that provides key gameplay elements that will be fully realized in the flagship MGSV.
The title will take players through a rescue mission by infiltrating a Cuban prison camp, the events of which will set into motion the events that will find their consequences in the plot of MGSV. This prologue will also serve as a demonstration of the key advancements that will be made in the series using Kojima Production’s FOX Engine. The possibilities it offers, such as the large open environment, differences caused by time of day and night, and weather, will all have an effect on gameplay experiences. These factors will play an important role in Ground Zeroes that will familiarize users with what is to come in MGSV: The Phantom Pain.
Ground Zeroes, as with MGSV, will be available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in Spring 2014. The boxed versions of the PS3 and Xbox 360 games will be available at retail for $29.99, with digital versions costing a lesser $19.99. The PS4 and Xbox One digital version will be sold for $29.99.
