If playing War in the North recently has reminded me of anything, it’s that this industry is still screaming for a really, really good Lord of the Rings game. It seems baffling that in a universe where all the lore and world building is already done (and established as pretty much the best ever), truly brilliant games are so hard to come by. Still, publisher Warner Bros. are having another crack at it by commissioning F.E.A.R. developer Monolith Productions to create a dark and nasty action game named Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor in which a Ranger (of the North or of Gondor we’ve yet to find out) named Talion seeks vengeance against the evil beings who killed his family. Much like War in the North, Warner Bros. are also pushing for some real bloody violence in this Shadow of Mordor, with an PEGI 18/M age rating.
“In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, players will explore the dark and very personal theme of vengeance in a world where decisions have a consequence, and those consequences persist even after death,” is the word from Samantha Ryan at Warner. If this makes it anything like Castlevania: Lords of Shadow except in Tolkien’s universe, count me in.
No release date just yet for the game, but it’s set to release for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.
