One of the biggest gripes many people had with the first Final Fantasy XIII was that half of the game’s map consisted of linear corridors, which was mainly because the game was more of an interactive movie than it was a traditional wide open Final Fantasy JRPG. Square-Enix has since brought the game’s sequels back to its roots by adding a lot more exploration in the sequel, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and providing four large regions that cover a continent for the third and final game, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, according to its recently uncovered map.
Some fans have gone into the Japanese Facebook application for Lightning Returns and ripped maps containing the maps of each of the four main regions of the game, giving a closer look at how big the map will be. While the game won’t contain a fully explorable open world, it does boast some impressive areas that should be more than enough to satisfy the avid JRPG fan. I got a little excited and went ahead and connected the four regions to get a better look at how the four regions will connect.
Keep in mind this doesn’t include the ruins that must be explored beneath the Dead Dunes area, that big field-looking near the bottom. If the demonstration of the Wildlands area is any indication, this is huge; even the cities which look relatively small in comparison. There’s no telling just how much will be in the final game just yet, but so far so good.
Big ol’ map to explore? Check. Deliciously fun combat system? Check. Customization? Tons. Personally, that’s just about all I need to have a grand old time, and I can’t wait to see how it all shapes up when Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII arrives in North America on February 11th, 2014 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
