Today in the ever-changing world of Square Enix, two announcements were made regarding Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
The first announcement involves the return of one of the original FFXIII cast members: Oerba Yun Fang. As one of the strongest members of the original party and one of the saviors of Cocoon and Gran Pulse, Fang is a pretty big deal. Players can look forward to teaming up with Fang once more (though probably temporarily) to take down some tough baddies in a pretty mysterious area of Lightning Returns that Lightning may not have fared so well against were she alone.
The second announcement, fitting with the apocalyptic tone of Lightning Returns, is that, in a first for the series, you can actually make certain monster species go entirely extinct. Given the finality of the game’s world, there are no new people being born, the same seemingly true of monsters. In this dying world, members of monster species exist in limited numbers, making them free for Lightning’s pickings. The last remaining survivor of each species is known as the “Last One,” a monster who is significantly more powerful than his fallen comrades and will pose something of a boss-level threat to Lightning. But once this final member has been slain, that’s it: they’re gone for good. Square Enix has however noted that not every species can be entirely wiped out. If so, there would eventually come a point when Lightning has no more non-boss battles to fight or fuel for grinding.
Lightning Returns is due out in Japan in less than a month and will be hitting North American shores on February 11th, 2014. Try to keep your sanity until then! You can check out the post right here on Square Enix’s blog.
