One of the biggest niche RPGs of the past few years seems to have been the Hyperdimension Neptunia series. Though the first game was overall panned, the sequels seemed to pick up the pieces and make an interesting visual-novel dungeon crawler with an aim to make some jabs at the gaming industry as a whole. Now the anime game parody is back on the Vita with Hyperdimension Neptunia PP announced for the US and European markets by NIS of America.
In PP, players take the role of a producer for the group of CPU guardians to help them form an idol band and win the hearts of the people of Gamindustri away from the evil MOB-48. There’s a pretty good chance there will plenty of jokes made at the expense of popular real life idol culture and idol icons, so expect this game to service even more of a niche than the previous titles.
I’ll be interested to see how this plays out, as I actually quite enjoyed the second Neptunia game. It was a cool and clever concept, I just don’t think they played the joke out as much as I think they could’ve; there was a lot of commentary on companies and piracy, but the game fell back too much on anime tropes. Hopefully that’ll be a better fit for an idol management game. And hey, this is as close as we’ll get to an Idolmaster game here in the states, right?
