Danish independent developers BetaDwarf started three years ago in an unused classroom from their local university. They crammed eight developers in there, along with everything they needed to live and develop their action RPG game titled FORCED. They worked and lived in that classroom, completely unnoticed by the university for eight months, until they were found and forced to move out. From there, the team moved into a house in the middle of nowhere, working in isolation for two more years. This was all funded entirely from all the devs’ collective savings, but the money was starting to run low.
This is where Kickstarter comes into play, which after almost failing, ended up funding them $65,000 to continue development. But it wasn’t enough, BetaDwarf was still struggling to land a distribution deal, so they took matters into their own hands and took out a private risk bank loan for $200,000. Four more months of ’round the clock work, and here we are today; FORCED is now available on Steam! I should probably tell you a bit about the game, huh? I’ll let them describe it for you:
“Forced is a one-to-four-player co-op arcade action RPG with puzzle and tactical elements. You are cast as slaves in the toughest fantasy gladiator school of them all, condemned to fight to the death, all the while attempting to win your freedom. You will face deadly trials and huge creatures, but Balfus, your Spirit Mentor will guide you in your quest to break the chains of oppression.”
I always love to hear the story behind something created, by anyone. It’s great to hear BetaDwarf’s tale in particular, you can tell that they put everything they had into this game. You can snag FORCED on Steam for PC, Mac, and Linux for a discounted price of $11.99 until October 31. Check out the launch trailer below:
