The End of ‘Assassin’s Creed’ May Be Nigh

Is it too late to retitle the game Black Swan Dive?

He falls and dies right there. That’s the end of the series.

All good things must come to an end, but not before busting out some brand new online features to make fans salivate.

Recently, Ashraf Ismael, the game director for Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag revealed to Eurogamer how there would be online connectivity present, even in the single-player campaign that is due to serve as more of a companion app to add more depth to players of the game that wish to partake in this.

It is essentially going to be a collective research-type segment where players are all analysts for Abstergo Entertainment, where they are tasked with researching the life of Edward Kenway by using Animus technology, for some reason. Let it be known though, that this is entirely optional and people can still get the full single-player campaign while playing offline. Still, this increased interactivity with the modern world brings up some interesting questions for the series, as this is all likely setting up for an inevitable conclusion.

Ismael also revealed that there will indeed be an end to Assassin’s Creed. With multiple development teams, there are people working on every different aspect of the yearly titles, and the writers already seem to have some sort of idea of how they would like to send the series off.

Sharks. It was the sharks all along.

Sharks. It was the sharks all along.

“We have an idea of where the end is, what the end is. But of course Yves announced we are a yearly title, we ship one game a year. So depending on the setting, depending on what fans want, we’ve given ourselves room to fit more in this arc. But there is an end.”

Again, something interesting to note is when he says “arc,” as Ismael could be referring to Assassin’s Creed 4 or the series as a whole. If he is talking about the entire Assassin’s Creed story arc to date, that usually suggests that there are more stories that would be concocted well past Desmond story. As a yearly title, one shouldn’t be surprised if there wind up being plenty more games featuring a new protagonist, similar to how Mass Effect has been confirmed to continue now that the Commander Shepard story arc has concluded.

With that aforementioned online research feature, that may be a way of uncovering more mythology of the series as a segue into a brand new story for the series. For now though, you can expect more assassination adventures on the horizon. We’ll keep you updated as more information rolls in on the latest of the Assassin’s Creed franchise.
