Believe it or not, but it’s been three years since the big implosion between Activision and Infinity Ward over Call of Duty bonuses, insubordination, and general bad behavior on all sides. Founders Jason West and Vince Zampella immediately started Respawn under the EA umbrella after all this went down and went to work on a new game.
That game has finally been announced. Titanfall is slated for release in Spring 2014 and is (wait for it) a multiplayer-focused futuristic First Person Shooter. According to our pals at Game Informer by way of Gematsu, Titanfall will feature pitched multiplayer battles between humans and mechs (each with unique abilities to balance out their weaknesses) in futuristic Earth-like colonies throughout the galaxy.
Based on the description given, Titanfall sounds like it could also have the alternate title: Respawn Presents: Every Video Game From the Last 8 Years: The Game. That’s not to say it’s going to be bad by any means however. It’s going to be running on the Source engine and you can bet these guys will have it trucking along at a smooth 60 frames per second.
Now that Titanfall has been officially announced, I’m curious about one thing. By the time it comes out (and I’m calling it here that they’re going to delay it until November 2014 so it goes head-to-head with Call of Duty), will its intended audience be there for them? They are undoubtedly talented developers, but they also haven’t shipped a game since 2009. It will be very intriguing to see whether Respawn can reclaim their FPS throne, or whether they will become the video game version of Wally Pipp.
