Nope, that’s not a Fallout 4 screenshot. Rather, it was announced during the Xbox One reveal that Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Ghosts will feature canine companions. According to executive producer Mark Rubin, “We’ve had dogs in Call of Duty before, but…this is someone you care about, this is a squad member. He does everything from sniffing out explosives to protecting the team.”
Cut to a video of real-life dogs jumping around wearing adorable little motion capture outfits. I’m not going to lie, my first thought when I heard this was, “Ooooh! Lil’ pup-pups! I love games that have dogs!” But this was immediately followed by a heartbreaking realization: that dog is inevitably going to die. More specifically, they are going to kill the dog as a cheap ploy to elicit emotion from the player.
For what better way to inject some much needed emotion into a franchise, where killing and watching your friends get killed has become utterly mundane, than seeing your beloved pup-pup take a bullet to the face? Personally, I’ll stick to Fallout. At least I can always reload a save game when Dogmeat dies.
