Assassin’s Creed is a series in which there are about a hundred reasons why I should be crazy about it, but it just doesn’t quite click with me. Thankfully for Ubisoft, my preferences don’t represent the majority of video game fans because every new one they churn out comes up solid gold.
The latest installment, entitled Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, features a new character named Edward Kenway. Kenway is a member of the British Navy in the early 1800s, who insinuates himself in this historically-based period in which pirates ruled the seas. Notorious figures such as Blackbeard and Tom Vine figure into the story in some manner that almost certainly has ramifications that can only be answered in Assassin’s Creed 5.
As far as gameplay is concerned…well, it’s an Assassin’s Creed game. Ship-to-ship battles appear to be a big feature, as do underwater encounters with sharks — sure to trigger any residual Far Cry 3 trauma from last year. Other than that, you know the drill; run around, climb things, follow people, stab targets, and use block/attack to deal with enemies.
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is scheduled to be released on October 29th on PC, next-generation consoles, and the Wii U.
