[News] New Neo Geo device appears, looks a lot like an iPhone

Pictures of a new Neo Geo pocket device have been popping up on the internet. The device will have official licensing from SNK Playmore and includes a library of 20 games built in. While the device doesn’t have a title beyond the placeholder “Neo Geo Portable Device,” and not much is known about the specs, it has the potential to be a really cool device.

The device has a very modern look to it, which is ironic considering the library of games the Neo Geo has to offer. Speaking of software, the device will come pre-loaded with 20 Neo Geo classics.

While we don’t have any definitive specifications, it is rumored to sport a 4.5″ screen, 2GB of storage and an SD card slot. I’m not entirely sure what purpose the SD card slot will serve. Do they plan to release games for the system on SD cards like a DS?

SD slot? Pirates ahoy!

The device features a joystick, four face buttons and start & select buttons. That’s all fine and dandy, but a second look reveals that there are two shoulders buttons on each side. That is a really impressive feat for something that looks to be roughly the size of an iPhone.

Another interesting bit is that it has an AV out port on the top of the device. I suppose this means you can send your game signal to your TV or monitor. That is a really cool feature, and would be a nice way for those of us who missed the Neo Geo home console to experience the magic. It also looks like it has a mini USB port on top, presumably to charge the device but could also make for easier file management; instead of having to remove your SD card from the device you can just manage the files on your SD card with the USB cord.

I feel like I’d be constantly holding down R2 just gripping the thing.

The bottom of the device isn’t anything too special. Here you will find the volume controls, brightness controls and headphone jack.

I am really interested to see how this thing plays out. I used to own a Neo Geo Pocket Color and always thought it was a very cool device. I’m just now getting into real Neo Geo games. The Playstation 3 offers nice exposure to some of the games classics. With Neo Geo games being easily available there as well as on the Wii, it will be interesting to see if the device actually comes to be and if it does how well it will do in the market. Assuming we will get it over in the states anyway, little to no information is available about the device just yet. When more information becomes available I’ll be sure to update!
